#31: Garden Stalking
One of my favorite pastimes while out for a walk is what I like to call "garden stalking." It’s a delightful mix of admiration and aspiration, where I find myself captivated by the stunning landscapes that adorn the homes in my neighborhood. More than just the architecture, it’s the gardens that genuinely steal my heart—the vibrant flowers, lush greenery, and intricate designs all come together to create a visual feast. I often daydream about how such beautiful plant life could transform my yard into a little slice of paradise.
When walking with friends or family and I come across a plant or flower that piques my curiosity, I don’t hesitate to ask them for its name. Their insights often enrich our conversations and deepen my appreciation for the natural beauty around us. However, when strolling alone and encountering mystery plants, I turn to my trusty smartphone and consult the ‘Google Gods.’ It’s incredible how quickly I can uncover the scientific names and care tips for various foliage, satisfying my curiosity and fueling my passion for gardening. Each walk becomes not just a physical journey, but an adventure in horticultural discovery.
During a recent walk with my mom, I couldn't help but notice the striking beauty of some purple and magenta flowers that were blooming directly from the slender, leafless branches of a small, skeletal tree. Intrigued, I turned to my mom and Kevin, hoping to identify these captivating blossoms, but neither recognized the tree. Curiosity piqued, I took to the Internet for answers.
To my delight, I discovered that the tree was a Magnolia Liliiflora, commonly known by several names including Lily Magnolia, Woody Orchid, Red Magnolia, Jane Magnolia, Japanese Magnolia, Tulip Magnolia, and Mulan Magnolia. This magnificent deciduous shrub is known for its striking pink or reddish-purple flowers, which typically bloom in April and early May, creating a stunning visual display in gardens and landscapes.
As one of the smaller varieties of magnolia, it is often chosen for informal screens or hedges for its aesthetic appeal and its versatility in garden design. The delicate petals of the flowers look even more breathtaking in person, and their colors glow in the daylight.
Reflecting on this lovely encounter with nature, I couldn't resist adding "Garden Stalking" to my favorites ‘Good Things.’ There's something truly special about wandering through gardens and discovering nature's hidden beauty. This hobby provides an incredible source of inspiration for painting, allowing me to explore vibrant colors, diverse shapes, and intricate patterns found in nature and daily life. The moments spent engaging with this pastime spark my creativity, motivating me to capture the beauty I observe on canvas. Each experience deepens my art appreciation and enriches my artistic journey.
See you tomorrow!
